Comprehensive modernization of the lighting system at the largest IKEA logistics platform in France
Welcome to IKEA’s logistics platform in Saint-Quentin-Fallavier, a major hub that has been operating since 1992 and now plays a crucial role in supporting France’s fast-growing e-commerce demand. Running seven days a week and spanning around 100,000 m² with roughly 500 employees, the site’s mission has evolved significantly: where it once supplied stores nationwide, it now delivers the majority of orders directly to customers—especially for e-commerce, as well as large, specific orders such as kitchens and sofas.
Reassessing one of the site’s most fundamental infrastructures
The previous setup relied on classic fluorescent “neon” tube luminaires installed in long aisle rows—with no real ability to switch or dim dynamically. As a result, aisles were permanently lit at fixed levels, driving unnecessary electricity consumption and limiting the opportunity to adapt light to real activity. The ambition was clear: improve visual comfort and employees’ working conditions while reducing energy use in a measurable, sustainable way.
Achieving Efficiency Through Lighting Intelligence
The site selected the Zumtobel solution, deploying CRAFT II with basicDIM wireless as the backbone for modernization. In racking aisles reaching approximately 90 meters, the priority was to minimize consumption by activating only a few luminaires at a time—only where people are present—rather than lighting entire aisles continuously. On top of presence-based control, the system also uses ambient light conditions to manage dimming, ensuring light levels stay appropriate while avoiding unnecessary output when daylight or background light is sufficient.
Delivering Value Beyond Energy Savings
Over a three-year rollout, the site replaced almost 90% of its fixtures and achieved electricity savings of 15% to 23%, while also benefiting from a five-year warranty. Beyond energy performance, the upgrade delivered tangible improvements in lighting quality and working conditions—supporting higher light levels for order preparation and helping eliminate dark spots previously observed with traditional fluorescent lighting, particularly around machines and conveyors. Implementation was carefully coordinated through multiple discussions and a phased approach adapted to operational constraints, with work carried out during both day and night. After five years of use, reliability has remained strong, with only marginal warranty-covered issues and very responsive after-sales support—reinforcing this project as a long-term partnership model that other sites in France are also adopting.
