Light as a key to productivity in Belgium
Tohether with Zumtobel and partners from science, Volvo Group Trucks Belgium explored how Human Centric Lighting (HCL) enhances the well-being and performance of shift workers. The right lighting is able to stabilize the circadian rhythm, reduce problems with sleep, and improve concentration.
Volvo: focus on people
Volvo Group's philosophy places people at the center. That was our main motivation for this project: we wanted the best light for every type of task at every work place," says Rudy Van Leeuwen, electrical installations project manager of the Group's Real Estate Division at Volvo Group Trucks Operations in Ghent. From the very beginning, we adopted a scientific approach in collaboration with Ghent University. With Zumtobel, we brought a partner on board who understood our vision and was ready to tackle the practical realisation of the study. Zumtobel with its many years of experience with similar projects was even able to help us secure the financing.
Technology with a measurable impact
Through tunable white technology, the lighting can be adapted to the natural progression of daylight – with a morning "sunrise" and gentle evening light. This stabilized the biological clock of the shift workers and supported their natural circadian rhythm.
Volvo focuses on light of the future
Due to the positive outcome, Volvo Group Trucks decided to completely convert the Ghent plant to tunable white LEDs. In addition to the health benefits, the system also convinces through impressive energy efficiency and cost savings — a milestone in modern industrial lighting.
Improved sleep and a higher level of concentration
The study found that HCL lighting significantly improves sleep patterns and enhances alertness. The employees were more focused during their shift, sleep came swifter and they overall felt more rested.
